Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Bank of Lithuania itself, founded in 1922 during the interwar period when Lithuania operated as an independent republic before Soviet annexation in 1940. The bank was re-established following the restoration of independence in 1990, and this coin belongs to the early wave of commemorative issues produced as the country rebuilt its numismatic and monetary institutions from scratch.
