Maironis — the pen name of Jonas Mačiulis — was the defining poet of the Lithuanian national revival, his verses so thoroughly absorbed into national consciousness that memorizing them was a standard part of Soviet-era schooling even when the political content made officials uneasy. This coin marks the 150th anniversary of his birth in 1862.
The Bank of Lithuania has issued commemoratives on Maironis at several intervals; KM#192 is the 2012 silver issue in the longer series honoring Lithuanian cultural figures, struck to standard proof specifications at a limited mintage.
