Additional information

Vilnius University was founded in 1579 by Stefan Batory, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, at the urging of the Jesuits, who ran the institution for nearly two centuries before the order's suppression in 1773. It holds the distinction of being one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe, though its history was anything but continuous — the university was closed by Tsarist authorities in 1832 following the November Uprising and did not reopen until 1919, a gap of nearly ninety years.
