Additional information

The Baltic Way — August 23, 1989 — was a human chain stretching roughly 675 kilometers through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, organized to mark the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and demand independence from Soviet rule. Approximately two million people joined hands across all three republics simultaneously. Lithuania issued this commemorative a decade later, by which point the country had already secured NATO membership candidacy and was deep into EU accession negotiations — a political distance from 1989 that the coin's timing quietly underscores.
