Obverse description Bare head of the youthful river god Anapos facing left, rendered in fine relief with flowing, tousled curls characteristic of Syracusan die-cutting of the early fourth century BC. A single grain kernel is placed in the field behind the head, serving as a subsidiary symbol alluding to the agricultural fertility of the Syracusan plain. The portrait displays the sensitive modelling and naturalistic treatment of hair typical of the master engravers active under Dionysius I. No legend is present on this issue.
