Additional information

Lesotho's decimal coinage system launched in 1966 with independence, but the loti and its subdivisions didn't fully displace South African rand circulation for years — the two currencies ran in parallel under a 1:1 peg enforced through the Common Monetary Area agreement with Pretoria. Moshoeshoe II, the king whose portrait anchors this series, was twice deposed: first in 1990, then permanently in 1996 when his son Letsie III took the throne following a dispute with the military government.

The decade-long run of this type reflects steady restrikes rather than continuous demand.
