Obverse description The first Coat of Arms of independent Malta occupies the central field, depicting a vertically divided shield bearing a cross on the dexter side and vertical stripes on the sinister side, flanked by two sea-horse supporters. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown, and a scroll below bears the national motto. The country name legend MALTA is inscribed in large spaced Latin characters along the lower periphery.
