Obverse description Pope John Paul II is depicted in a deeply devotional pose, kneeling and bending forward to kiss the ground, his white vestments and skullcap rendered in low relief. The figure occupies the central field within an inner circle, with the engraver's signature visible in the lower exergue. The surrounding legend reads IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. A.XXII above and AN. IVB.
