The 2001 Vatican coinage series was among the last issued under the traditional pre-euro Vatican lira system before Italy's adoption of the euro rendered the entire series obsolete at the close of that year. After January 2002, Vatican lira ceased to be legal tender, making the complete 2001 annual set the final chapter of a coinage tradition stretching back to the Papal States.
KM#333 belongs to a commemorative pairing honoring both the reigning John Paul II and his predecessor Pius XII — a format the Vatican mint used periodically to link pontificates across time.
