| Reverse description | The reverse features a dynamic allegorical scene of human solidarity composed of multiple figures in vigorous interaction across the central field. A standing figure extends assistance toward a kneeling or seated figure in the foreground, while additional figures in the background reach out to one another, conveying themes of mutual aid and compassion. The legend CITTA DEL VATICANO curves along the upper rim, with the denomination L. 50 inscribed at the bottom of the field. The mint mark R for the Rome Mint appears in the lower left field. |

The 1989 Vatican numismatic program was issued during a period when John Paul II was pressing hard on Cold War fault lines — Solidarity had just won Poland's partially free elections in June of that year, and the Berlin Wall would fall before the calendar turned. Whether the "Human Solidarity" theme was chosen with deliberate timing or simply reflected the Pope's long-standing social encyclical tradition rooted in Laborem Exercens (1981) is a question the Vatican's numismatic office has never formally answered.
