Obverse description Draped bust of Pope John Paul II facing right, holding aloft a papal ferula (pastoral staff) with both hands raised. The effigy is rendered in detailed low relief, capturing the pontiff in vestments. The circular legend around the upper field reads IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. AN.XX MCMXCVIII, denoting his papal title and the twentieth year of his pontificate.

Reverse description Allegorical scene depicting a seated woman and a standing child, both nude and cowering beneath an enormous oppressive hand descending from above, symbolising the subjugation and suffering of women and children. The engraver's name L. DE SIMONI appears along the left inner border, the sculptor's name SIBORGHI is inscribed in the lower central field, and the Rome Mint mark R appears to the right. The denomination L.50 is inscribed at the top of the field, while the legend CITTA' DEL VATICANO curves along the lower border.
