The Izmir Clock Tower was built in 1901 to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdülhamid II's accession to the throne, funded by a consortium of local merchants and designed by the Levantine architect Raymond Charles Père. It stands at the intersection of Konak Square — historically the administrative heart of the city — and has remained one of the few Ottoman-era monuments to survive Izmir's catastrophic 1922 fire largely intact.
The .925 silver bullion commemorative series from the Turkish Mint has drawn criticism from collectors for inconsistent die finishing on the field surfaces, particularly on pieces struck in the 2011–2013 production window.
