Gelidonya Burnu, the rocky cape on Turkey's southern coast where this lighthouse stands, is better known in archaeological circles as the site of the Late Bronze Age shipwreck excavated by George Bass beginning in 1960 — the first underwater excavation conducted entirely by scuba divers. The lighthouse itself guides vessels through one of the Mediterranean's most historically treacherous passages, where currents converging off the Teke Peninsula have claimed ships for over three millennia.
