The composition is vigorous and sculptural, evoking Socialist Realist artistic ideals. The central figure is enclosed within a wreath of olive branches that frames the entire field, rendered in fine detail with berries and leaves. The field is otherwise unlettered, placing full visual emphasis on the allegorical figure. The overall design is executed in the monumental heroic style characteristic of Bulgarian commemorative coinage of the period. |

Issued to mark the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian state — the traditional date being 681 AD, when Khan Asparuh established the First Bulgarian Empire after defeating Byzantine forces at the Battle of Ongala. The Bulgarian National Bank produced a substantial commemorative program around this anniversary, of which this piece is one entry among several denominations.
The .900 silver composition places it among the finer commemorative issues of the socialist period, when Zhivkov's government used anniversary coinage partly as a hard-currency earner through Western numismatic markets.
