The 1990 Bulgarian 50 Leva was printed by Goznak in Moscow — a reminder of just how thoroughly the Soviet printing infrastructure underpinned Eastern Bloc currency production through the final years of the communist period. Bulgaria's reliance on Goznak persisted even as the political ground was already shifting; the November 1989 removal of Todor Zhivkov after 35 years in power had occurred months before this note entered circulation.

Designer Dimitar Toshev was responsible for several Bulgarian note designs of this period. Security provision is limited to a watermark alone.
