Zenaida Pally (1924–2007) was one of Moldova's most celebrated dramatic sopranos, her career centered at the National Opera in Chișinău during the Soviet period, when Moldovan cultural institutions were simultaneously promoted as proof of Soviet nationalities policy and constrained by it. This coin was issued as part of the National Bank's ongoing commemorative series honoring figures of Moldovan cultural history — a program that has leaned heavily toward musicians, poets, and artists as the country continues the post-independence work of constructing a distinct national identity.
The series to which this piece belongs uses the same 16.5g/.999 silver format across multiple issues, which has created some collector frustration with inconsistent mintage transparency from the National Bank.
