Vasile Lupu ruled Moldavia from 1634 to 1653, a reign long enough to make him one of the principality's most consequential figures — he founded the Trei Ierarhi monastery in Iași, hosted the 1642 Orthodox synod that ratified the Confession of Peter Mogila, and maneuvered between Ottoman suzerainty, Polish pressure, and Cossack alliance with unusual diplomatic dexterity. He was ultimately deposed by Gheorghe Ștefan with Cossack backing, the same force he had once used to consolidate power.
Moldova's commemorative silver program has issued in this weight class with some regularity since the early 2000s, with KM numbers now pushing past 220.
