Vasile Lupu ruled Moldavia from 1634 to 1653, a tenure marked by extraordinary cultural patronage — he funded the construction of the Church of the Three Hierarchs in Iași and hosted a church council in 1642 that produced one of the earliest printed legal codes in Romanian. His reign ended in forced abdication after a coalition of Wallachian and Cossack forces drove him from the throne.
