Moldova's commemorative wildlife series drew on the country's position along the Via Pontica flyway, one of Europe's major migratory bird corridors running through the lower Danube and Black Sea region. The spoonbill, which nests in the Danube Delta just across Moldova's southwestern border, made it onto this issue partly through coordination with regional conservation initiatives active in the early 2010s.
KM#68 was struck in limited numbers for collector sale rather than circulation — Moldova's silver commemoratives from this period rarely exceeded a few thousand pieces.
