Additional information

Issued to mark the 140th anniversary of Noul Neamț Monastery's founding in 1861 by monks who had fled across the Prut River from the Neamț Monastery in Romanian Moldavia following the annexation of Bessarabia. The monastery at Chițcani became the principal center of Orthodox monastic life in Soviet-era Moldova, surviving suppression largely because its proximity to the Transnistrian bank of the Dniester made administrative closure politically complicated for Soviet authorities.
