Varlaam, Metropolitan of Moldavia from 1632 to 1653, published the Cazania in 1643 — the first major book printed in the Romanian language on Moldavian soil. The Iași printing press that produced it was established specifically for that purpose under the patronage of Vasile Lupu, and the Cazania circulated across all three Romanian principalities, giving it an outsized role in standardizing the written language well before any political union existed.
