Ion Vatamanu was a Moldovan poet and scientist who worked as a researcher in nuclear physics while simultaneously producing some of the most significant Romanian-language lyric poetry of the Soviet period — a dual life that would have been impossible to advertise openly under the Moldavian SSR. This commemorative was issued as part of the National Bank's ongoing series honoring Moldovan cultural figures, released on the centenary of his birth.
