Additional information

Hîncu Monastery was founded in the 17th century by the Moldavian hatman Mihalcea Hîncu, reportedly after he witnessed a miraculous vision on the site. Suppressed under Soviet rule and converted to secular use for decades, it was returned to the Orthodox Church only after Moldovan independence in 1991 — making its appearance on a commemorative issue just nine years later a pointed statement about religious and cultural recovery.
