Romania's golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) had been functionally extirpated from most of its historic Carpathian range by the late Soviet period, making this 2002 issue part of a broader WWF-affiliated conservation awareness program that the National Bank ran through several wildlife-themed silver strikes in the early 2000s. Mintages were kept deliberately low for the series.
