Constantin Negruzzi is best remembered for "Alexandru Lăpușneanu," an 1840 historical novella drawn from the Moldavian chronicles of Grigore Ureche — widely considered the first significant work of Romanian-language prose fiction. Born in 1808 near Iași, he spent much of his life in what is now Romanian territory, which makes his appearance on a Moldovan commemorative a deliberate act of cultural reclamation, asserting a shared literary heritage across a politically divided Moldovan-Romanian identity.
The National Bank of Moldova has issued similar silver commemoratives honoring writers and cultural figures in small, collector-directed mintages with limited secondary market depth.
