| Obverse description | At center, the Romanian coat of arms rendered in relief within the triangular field. The national inscription ROMANIA appears above, while the date 2002 and face value 50 LEI are inscribed in the lower portion of the field. A triangular medallion depicting one of the cardinal points of a compass rose is incorporated into the design, reflecting the Reuleaux triangle format of the coin. |

Romania's silver wildlife commemorative program launched in the late 1990s drew on the country's Carpathian biodiversity as subject matter, with the chamois series among the more consistently collected. The 2002 issue coincided with Romania's active candidacy negotiations for EU accession — a period when the National Bank was simultaneously managing leu depreciation severe enough that a 50 lei face value was, in practical terms, nearly worthless in circulation.
