Alexandru Ioan Cuza was elected ruler of both Moldavia and Wallachia in January 1859 — a political maneuver that unified the two Danubian Principalities without technically violating the Treaty of Paris, which had only prohibited a single candidate from holding both thrones simultaneously. The Western powers, caught off guard, ultimately accepted the fait accompli. Moldova's commemorative program has returned to Cuza repeatedly, given his foundational role in what would become Romania — a state the Republic of Moldova holds a complicated relationship with.
