Romania's 1880 50 Lei series had a production life no one anticipated. The original notes were printed in France in the early 1880s, but wartime disruptions and chronic paper shortages pushed the Banca Națională into one of the more unusual decisions in Romanian monetary history: authorizing continued issue of these same plates into 1945, making this a genuine six-decade span between original design and final release date. The "Provisional Issue" designation acknowledges that anomaly directly.
Bramtot and Duval's design was executed through Dujardin's engraving at a moment when French bank note craft was at a high point commercially. That the plates survived long enough to still be usable — and necessary — in the last months of World War II says something bleak about Romanian wartime finance.
