50 Kwacha 50th Independence Anniversary

Zambia's 2014 commemorative 50 Kwacha was issued to mark fifty years of independence from British rule, achieved on 24 October 1964. The note entered circulation as a functioning denomination rather than a purely ceremonial piece — the 50 Kwacha had been reintroduced only two years earlier under the January 2013 rebasing, which dropped three zeros from the old kwacha and reset the currency entirely. This note therefore carries a double anniversary logic: the country's political independence and the relatively fresh monetary rebasing that gave the new kwacha series its own starting point.

Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig facility has printed Zambian currency across multiple series, and the security package here — including a see-through register — is consistent with the firm's mid-tier sovereign specification for African central bank clients of that period.
