Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's global coin program, which ran through the 1970s and enlisted dozens of governments to mint coins carrying agricultural themes as a low-cost public awareness campaign. Turkey participated repeatedly in the program throughout the decade. Acmonital — the same stainless steel alloy developed in Italy and widely adopted for FAO issues — was chosen partly for its resistance to corrosion in humid storage conditions common in rural economies where these coins were theoretically meant to circulate.
