Additional information

Abdülhamid II came to power in August 1876 under acute fiscal distress — the Ottoman state had defaulted on its foreign debt just months earlier, in October 1875, the largest sovereign default of the nineteenth century. Gold coinage issued in the opening years of his reign circulated against a backdrop of near-total confidence collapse in Ottoman paper currency, making hard metal issues the only exchange many creditors would accept.

KM#724 spans the first regnal years before the Public Debt Administration was imposed in 1881, fundamentally altering how Ottoman finances — and by extension the mint — operated.
