Landsbanki Íslands turned to Danmarks Nationalbanks Seddeltrykkeriet for this series — a Danish state printer producing notes for what was still, constitutionally, a kingdom in personal union with Denmark under Christian X. Iceland would not sever that union until 1944, and the political ambiguity of the 1930s is embedded in this note's very existence: an Icelandic institution, a Danish press, a shared monarch.
Gerhard Heilmann is better known internationally as an ornithologist than a banknote designer — his 1926 book on the origin of birds remained a standard reference for decades. The Landsbanki commissions represent an unusual detour in an unusual career.
