Iceland's 50 Krónur series ran through a period of chronic inflation that repeatedly eroded the currency's purchasing power — the króna had been redenominated in 1981 at a rate of 100 old krónur to one new, and even after that reset, inflation averaged above 20% annually through much of the late 1980s. That the denomination survived in coin form into the 2000s reflects how aggressively the Central Bank eventually brought inflation to heel under IMF-aligned fiscal policy.
