Bradbury Wilkinson printed this series for Iceland across several years of the early 1980s, a period when the country was battling some of the worst inflation in its peacetime history — by 1983, annual inflation had exceeded 80%. The 50 Krónur denomination was effectively being eroded faster than the notes could circulate meaningfully, which is part of why the entire series was retired and replaced with the new króna in 1981, redenominating at 100 to 1.
The shared design credit between Kristín Þórkelsdóttir and Stephen Alan Fairbairn is unusual — Bradbury Wilkinson typically handled design in-house, making the Icelandic collaboration relatively uncommon for the firm.
