Sweden's Riksbank introduced a revised 50 Kronor series in 2004 partly to address weaknesses in the earlier P#62 and P#63 issues, which had proven vulnerable to relatively unsophisticated counterfeiting operations during the late 1990s. The 2004 series added a revised watermark and improved paper specification, though by later standards the security package remained modest for a denomination in active everyday use.

Three signature combinations appear across the series run. The 2011-dated notes retain the Gernandt/Ingves pairing from 2008 — Ingves having taken the Riksbank governorship in January of that year and remaining in post well beyond this series' withdrawal.
