Obverse description Printed in purple on light brown paper, the obverse is centred on a circular vignette of a sailing vessel, flanked on either side by a circular guilloche medallion carrying the denomination numeral. An upper text panel bears the issuing legend, while a lower panel accommodates the signature block. The entire composition is enclosed within a decorative frame with the name of the issuing authority inscribed along each side.

Grønlands Styrelse was the Danish colonial administration for Greenland, and these notes circulated exclusively within the island — they were not legal tender anywhere in Denmark proper. The series ran across nearly two decades and three different signature combinations, reflecting administrative turnover in Godthåb rather than any monetary reform. Eske Brun, whose signature appears on the later issues, was the dominant figure in Greenlandic governance through the German occupation of Denmark, when the island briefly operated under American protection and Brun effectively ran Greenland with considerable autonomy from Copenhagen.

Pick #17 designates the "Type I" with the pattern printed outside the frame — a detail that distinguishes it from later printings of the same denomination.
