Greenland's current banknote series, introduced in 2016, was the first issued under the Grønlands Selvstyre — the Home Rule authority established in 2009 — giving these notes a political significance the earlier Danish-administered series never carried. Franck Medina, a French designer, won the commission through open competition, an unusual procurement route for a small-circulation Arctic currency.

Circulation volumes are extremely low by any standard; Greenland's population sits under 57,000, and electronic payment dominates even in remote settlements. Physical notes from this series accumulate little genuine wear.
