Additional information

Issued to mark the Sydney 2000 Games while still dated 1996, this coin belongs to the wave of premature Olympic commemoratives that flooded the collector market throughout the mid-1990s — many issued by nations with no athletes competing and no meaningful connection to the host city. Laos sent no delegation to Sydney.

The Bank of the Lao PDR produced a significant number of themed silver issues during this period, largely through arrangements with European coin marketing firms that handled design, minting, and distribution entirely outside the country.
