| Obverse lettering | Bank of Papua New Guinea Fifty Kina |
| Reverse description | A portrait vignette of the late Sir Michael Somare, founding Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, occupies the left field. Traditional artefacts from across the nation's cultural regions are arranged in the central and right fields, including spears from the Sepik, a shield and mask from New Ireland, a leaf and pointed Tubuan face mask from New Britain, a feathered headdress from the Highlands, and a mask and ceremonial costume from the Sepik River, all set against a multicolour guilloche underprint. The denomination and issuer name appear in intaglio lettering. |

Papua New Guinea achieved independence on 16 September 1975, making this a jubilee issue timed to the half-century mark. Note Printing Australia has handled PNG polymer issues since the late 1990s, and the 50 Kina denomination has anchored commemorative releases in this series before — the format is well-established.
The Kina itself was introduced at independence, replacing the Australian dollar at par. Fifty years on, that original parity is a distant memory.
