Papua New Guinea's 25th independence anniversary fell in September 2000, and this commemorative 50 Kina was among the early polymer issues from the Bank of Papua New Guinea — a relatively swift adoption of the substrate given that Note Printing Australia had only been producing polymer notes commercially since the late 1980s. The optically variable ink on this note was a meaningful addition for a Pacific nation where note authentication infrastructure outside Port Moresby was limited.
Pick 25 is moderately scarce in genuinely uncirculated condition; commemoratives of this type often entered informal circulation in rural areas rather than being preserved by the recipients they were distributed to.
