South Korea's currency in 1958 was still navigating the aftermath of the Korean War's hyperinflationary spiral — the Hwan itself had only been introduced in 1953 as a replacement for the Won at a rate of one Hwan to 100 Won, a forced redenomination that did almost nothing to restore public confidence in paper money. The 50 Hwan denomination sits in the middle of that troubled monetary period, printed domestically by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation at a time when local production capacity was still being rebuilt with postwar foreign aid.

The Hwan lasted only until 1962, when another redenomination collapsed it back into a new Won at 10 Hwan to 1 Won.
