Bartholomew I's visit to Ukraine in July 2008 carried considerable ecclesiastical weight: the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople has long claimed jurisdiction over the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, a position Moscow vigorously contests. The visit came years before the formal granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2019, making it an early and pointed assertion of Constantinople's stake in Ukrainian church affairs.
The 500-gram format places this squarely among the National Bank of Ukraine's prestige collector issues of the period, struck in limited numbers for institutional and diplomatic distribution rather than any meaningful secondary market.
