The Nikitsky Botanical Garden, founded near Yalta in 1812 by the naturalist Christian Steven, was established by imperial decree as a scientific institution for acclimatizing economically useful plants to Crimean conditions — a practical colonial-era ambition dressed in Enlightenment clothing. Steven had previously catalogued flora across the Caucasus for the Russian Empire, and the garden became the most significant horticultural research station in the Black Sea region.
Ukraine issued several large-format 500g silver pieces in the early 2010s targeting the collector market; this is among them. The garden itself remained an active research institution through the Soviet period and into Ukrainian independence, accumulating one of the largest dendrology collections in eastern Europe.
