Zistersdorf is an oil town — the Zistersdorf field was Austria's most significant domestic petroleum source, and the region's relative economic stability during the chaotic Heller-inflation years of the early 1920s may explain why this Notgeld was issued at all rather than defaulting to barter arrangements common in more distressed municipalities. Local printer Franz Schweng operated out of nearby Gänserndorf, and his press handled several Lower Austrian community emergency issues during the same period.
