Zeiss is a tiny Upper Austrian municipality, and its 1920 Heller notes belong to the vast wave of Notgeld issued by Austrian communes after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left the new republic without adequate small-denomination currency in circulation. Emil Prietzel in Steyr was a regional printer who handled several such municipal commissions — competent but not artistically distinguished work.
The Jaksc reference places this firmly in the documented Austrian Notgeld corpus, though issues from minor Gemeinden like Zeiss were produced in limited quantities and saw genuine local use rather than the speculative collector-targeted runs that larger towns were already printing by 1921.
