Wolfern is a small parish municipality in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized communities, it resorted to issuing its own Notgeld during the postwar currency crisis when small-denomination coins disappeared almost entirely from circulation. The 50 Heller denomination was among the most practically necessary — the coinage gap it filled was felt daily in ordinary transactions, not in banking.
Emil Prietzel in Steyr was a regional printer responsible for a significant number of Upper Austrian municipal emergency issues in this period, which means the printing quality is competent but unsentimental. Wolfern's issue is unambiguous village Notgeld: functional, locally commissioned, and produced in modest quantities.
