Windegg is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it issued Notgeld during the severe coin shortage that followed the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. The 50 Heller denomination places this squarely in the mainstream of that emergency coinage substitute wave of 1920, when the new Austrian state had neither the metal nor the minting capacity to supply small change at scale.
Validation by official municipal stamp was the only authentication mechanism — no serial numbers, no watermarks. That simplicity made counterfeiting trivially easy, though the hyperlocal acceptance zone made it largely pointless.
