Wilhering's 50 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the First World War, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipal authorities scrambling to produce local emergency currency. Hundreds of small communities did the same, but Wilhering — home to one of the oldest Cistercian abbeys in Austria, founded in 1146 — had a ready source of artistic talent. P. Adalbero Marschaller was a monk of that abbey, and the commission stayed within the cloister walls.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1236-50 places this firmly within the documented Austrian municipal series, though surviving quantities vary wildly across Notgeld issues of this period. Signed by Starlinger, presumably a municipal official.
