Wiener Neudorf's 50 Heller note belongs to the vast Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities between 1919 and 1921, when the post-imperial collapse left small communities effectively cut off from adequate coin supply. Paul Gerin was one of Vienna's more prolific small-denomination printers of this period, producing emergency issues for dozens of Gemeinden simultaneously. Three signatories — the Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and Kämmerer — were required to validate the issue, a bureaucratic formality that makes unsigned remainders immediately distinguishable from genuinely circulated examples.
