Werfen is a small market town in the Pongau district of Salzburg province, and this 50 Heller note is a Notgeld emission — one of thousands of hyperlocal emergency issues that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1921 when small coin virtually vanished from circulation. The national government in Vienna was too occupied with post-imperial fiscal collapse to resupply the provinces with fractional coinage, so municipalities took matters into their own hands.

The JPR1173a designation places it within the Jaksch-Pick regional Notgeld reference, which catalogues Salzburg province issues separately from the broader Austrian corpus. Werfen's emission was modest in scope — the town had fewer than a thousand residents at the time.
